As dangerous cold gripped New York this week, Broadview Federal Credit Union stepped in to help vulnerable individuals and families facing life-threatening temperatures.

Today, Broadview employees delivered thousands of winter essentials to shelters across the state as part of the credit union’s expanded Code Blue initiative, which doubled in reach this year.

“Ensuring the safety and dignity of our neighbors is core to who we are,” said Broadview CEO Michael Castellana. “When dangerous weather puts lives at risk, we have a responsibility to act quickly and compassionately. By supplying shelters across New York with winter essentials that can improve comfort and well-being during this blistering cold, we’re standing with our community partners to protect the people who need us most.”

This winter, Broadview is providing $60,000 in essential supplies to 28 homeless and family crisis shelters across the Capital Region, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Binghamton. Broadview’s donation includes 3,400 winter hats, nearly 600 pairs of gloves, 4,000 pairs of socks, 2,000 fleece blankets, and thousands of hand warmers, personal care products, and cold weather necessities. Several sites also received towels, warm clothing, and bedding based on local needs.

Earlier today, Broadview employees joined staff at the City Mission of Schenectady to unload and distribute supplies ahead of the weekend’s dangerously low temperatures.

“The need has been great this winter, and with such severe weather coming our way we know it will get even greater,” said City Mission of Schenectady Executive Director Mike Saccocio. “Once again, Broadview comes through with help when we need them the most.  The people at Broadview always care – and they are always on time!”

Shelters say the timing could not be more critical, especially with subzero wind chills and increased Code Blue demand. Several Western New York organizations, including those in Buffalo, received deliveries from Broadview this week.

“Broadview and Response to Love Center are companions on the journey,” said Response to Love Center Executive Director Sister Mary Johnice Rzadkiewicz. “We respond when the need arises; we are ready to beat the freezing temps and heavy snow.”

Broadview employees across all regions helped sort, package, and deliver supplies, ensuring they reached shelters before the coldest days of the season.
