Broadview Fights Homelessness in Central New York

  • Email

January 07, 2026

In Central New York, homelessness remains a pressing challenge. State data shows the overall homelessness rate rose significantly from 2022 to 2024. In the face of that reality, Broadview Federal Credit Union is deepening its longstanding commitment to organizations on the front lines, expanding support that helps people find safety, stability, and a path forward.

From emergency shelter and free meals to counseling and permanent homes, two impactful community support organizations – the Rescue Mission Alliance and Catholic Charities of Onondaga County – are delivering help and hope to those battling homelessness.

“They’re human beings and they’ve fallen on tough times. They need some help”, said Rescue Mission Alliance Senior Director of Development Mackenzie Naum.

Catholic Charities of Onondaga County Executive Director Michael Melera shared Naum’s sentiment. “Our work, and really our devotion, is to help people get back on their feet so that they can take care of themselves and take care of their families,” he said.

Broadview honored the Rescue Mission Alliance and Catholic Charities of Onondaga County during their annual sponsored Syracuse Men’s Basketball game on December 17.

Broadview’s relationship with both nonprofits is rooted in decades of shared service.

In the past three years alone, Broadview has invested $150,000 in the Rescue Mission’s Syracuse campus, including renovations to an adult home called Crossroads Center. Crossroads is a 59-bed, congregate care residence for men, licensed by the New York State Department of Health. Broadview funds are also helping expand permanent housing through on-site apartments and sustain key support services such as the Rescue Mission’s emergency shelter, food service center, and thrift store.

“It’s nice that as we continue to expand, we’re able to offer more services, meet people truly where they are, and be able to give them everything they need right here,” said Naum.

Beyond the campus, the Rescue Mission has continued placing hundreds of individuals into permanent homes across Syracuse, Auburn, and Binghamton, including supportive housing for 11 men and women in renovated and tiny homes in Syracuse.

Catholic Charities of Onondaga County serves more than 10,000 at-risk individuals, including those living on the street. Over the past three years, Broadview has invested $90,000 to strengthen its Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) Program, which places individuals in private apartments and ensures they receive the supports they need, which range from mental health counseling to home repairs.

“There are about 340 people that are in their own apartments, that are not in a homeless shelter here in Syracuse, but in their own apartments. Broadview, and the members, have played a significant role in making sure that that outcome has occurred,” Melara said.

The Permanent Supportive Housing program has yielded significant positive results thanks to offering stable housing and trusted support networks, which are foundational to long-term wellbeing.

Through permanent supportive housing, emergency shelter, and essential services, Broadview’s community partners in Syracuse are helping thousands of people rebuild their lives, care for their families, and re-enter community life with dignity and resilience.

Broadview will continue to champion innovative, impactful solutions that transform our communities and the lives of the people who call them home.
