F.I.T. for Life Financial Education Event for Teens and Families

Broadview Federal Credit Union hosted Financial Independence Training (F.I.T.) for Life last week, welcoming teens, parents, and community members to a high energy, hands on financial education experience focused on developing real world money skills.
Held on Saturday, April 18, at Broadview’s Patroon Creek Boulevard location, the free, in-person program brought together high school-aged participants and supportive adults for a fast-paced financial simulation designed to build confidence, awareness, and practical decision-making skills.
Unlike traditional workshops, F.I.T. for Life placed teens directly into realistic financial scenarios. Participants were assigned future careers, selected housing and transportation options, managed expenses, developed savings plans, and navigated unexpected financial challenges, all while moving around the room and making choices in real time.
“I learned that even if you have something that you have to pay [for], you can still earn money back!” 11-year-old Peyton F. from Niskayuna. “[My budget] was good! I hope I’m not in debt,” she said.
Parents and caregivers participated alongside their children, offering support and gaining insight into the financial decisions young people face as they prepare for adulthood. The interactive format encouraged conversation, teamwork, and learning through experience, rather than lectures.
“At Broadview, we believe financial confidence starts with experience,” said Vice President of Financial Wellness and Youth Services Sarah Trela. “F.I.T. for Life gives young people a safe space to make decisions, learn from them, and build skills they’ll carry into adulthood.”

The event was open to all, which highlights the credit union’s ongoing commitment to serving as a trusted community educator. During the event, Broadview staff were available to answer questions about youth accounts, financial resources, and membership opportunities.
By hosting F.I.T. for Life during Financial Capability Month, Broadview reinforced its focus on youth and family financial wellness, helping teens develop essential money skills while strengthening connections within the community.
