Broadview Deepens Commitment to the American Red Cross

May 14, 2026

This month the American Red Cross, founded in New York State turns 145 years old. On the heels of ‘National American Red Cross Month’ in March, communities across the country came together to recognize the lifesaving work of the American Red Cross. Broadview Federal Credit Union was proud to celebrate the by reaffirming a longstanding partnership rooted in impact, compassion, and community care — one that extends far beyond blood drives and continues throughout the year.

Broadview announced a statewide donation of $80,000 to support the organization’s mission. This contribution brought the credit union’s total giving to more than $625,000 over the course of its long-standing annual partnership with the Red Cross.

“Our partnership with the American Red Cross is rooted in a shared commitment to caring for our communities in meaningful ways,” stated Broadview CEO Michael Castellana. “While many people know the Red Cross for blood donation, our support goes far beyond that — reaching disaster relief, support for military families, and critical services for those in need. We were proud to stand alongside the Red Cross during American Red Cross Month and this month’s 145th birthday milestone and look forward to continuing to build on a partnership that has made a lasting impact across the communities we serve.”

Across Upstate New York, the American Red Cross’s impact was evident throughout 2025. The organization supported 1,748 veterans through VA programs and stand-downs that included health screenings, meals, and behavioral health workshops. It equipped 89,492 people with essential First Aid and Safety Training, including CPR, AED education, water safety, and other lifesaving skills. They collected 219,280 units of blood, platelets, and when disaster struck, the Red Cross provided comfort and critical assistance to families facing 1,576 emergencies such as home fires. Together, these numbers illustrate the extraordinary scale of the Red Cross’s service in Upstate New York — and how partners like Broadview help make that impact possible.

“Beyond the Blood”: A Lifeline of Support

While blood donation remains a cornerstone of the relationship, Broadview’s support has extended into nearly every facet of the Red Cross mission. From disaster response to services for military members and veterans, the credit union has consistently stepped up to meet evolving community needs.

“Broadview’s partnership across Eastern and Western New York strengthens our ability to deliver essential Red Cross services every day,” said Kevin Coffey and Nick Bond, Regional CEOs of the American Red Cross Eastern and Western New York. “Their support helps us respond to home fires, sustain a reliable blood supply, and ensure military members and their families received the assistance they needed. Together, we continue to make a meaningful difference for people and communities across New York State.”

Employee Commitment Drives Impact

At the center of Broadview’s Red Cross partnership is its employees. More than 75 team members donate blood each year, often participating in multiple drives and treating it as a lifelong commitment.

For Broadview’s Director of Risk Monitoring, Megan Izzo, donating blood has long been second nature. Having started in her late teens, Megan maintained the commitment throughout her career, especially when workplace blood drives made it even easier to give back.

“Donating blood started for me in college, and over the last 20 years it’s become automatic,” said Izzo. “Whenever there’s a blood drive at Broadview, I don’t even think twice; I just go. It’s become part of my annual routine. Showing up consistently to help others is meaningful to me and can make a big difference.”

To date, Megan has donated more than 20 times, contributing approximately four gallons of blood through drives.

For Senior Branch Manager Joe Scriver, donating blood has always been deeply personal. Born Rh negative, Joe required a complete blood transfusion at birth — a procedure that saved his life and shaped the purpose behind every donation he has made since.

“I’m here today because someone donated blood for me. Giving back feels like the least I can do,” Scriver said. “It feels good knowing that what saved my life might help me save someone else’s.”

Joe has donated blood 78 times and is just two donations away from reaching his lifelong goal of 10 gallons — a milestone decades in the making.

His contribution has also earned him recognition as a Heroes for Babies donor. Because he is both CMV negative and O negative, his blood can be reserved specifically for newborns and immunocompromised patients.

“Only about 15% of donors qualify for this, so knowing my blood can help babies in need really means a lot to me,” he added. “It feels full circle.”

Beyond his own story, Joe hopes his visibility encourages others to donate.

“A big part of this is demystifying the process,” he said. “When donors feel respected and comfortable, they’re more likely to come back — and that’s how we save more lives.”

Leadership that Inspires Community Action

Broadview’s commitment to the American Red Cross has also extended into leadership and advocacy. Chief Commercial Banking Officer Lee Carman serves on the Red Cross board, helping guide strategic priorities and strengthen the partnership at a governance level.

“In my role on the Red Cross board, I’ve seen firsthand how critical strong partnerships are in delivering essential services across New York,” said Carman. “At Broadview, we believe leadership means stepping up where it matters. We are proud to support the Red Cross and remain committed to advancing its mission year-round.”

Throughout the year, Broadview team members and leadership continue to actively participate in signature Red Cross events, including the annual Fire + Ice Gala each April and Real Heroes Breakfasts across the state. These events continue to celebrate individuals whose courage and compassion create lasting positive change.
